Somerset's Christmas Parade Is Judged Before It Rolls: How the First Week of December Works Downtown

At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, every entry in the Somerset-Pulaski County Christmas Parade has to be parked in the Meece Middle School lot and ready to be judged. The Chamber's 2026 rules say the judges' points are tallied and the winners announced before the parade starts. Thirty minutes later, at 5:00 p.m., the first float pulls out toward East Mt. Vernon Street.

By the time the floats reach Fountain Square, the ribbons have already been awarded. That changes how the week works for anyone planning to be downtown. The contest happens in a parking lot. The 1.4 miles through town is a victory lap for winners who are already known, and the Thursday tree lighting, the Saturday vendor village and the skating rink all build up to that lap.

The Contest Happens in the Meece Lot

According to the 2026 parade rules, lineup at Meece Middle School begins at 1:30 p.m. That's three and a half hours before the parade moves. The Chamber asks entries to "please be patient as we get all floats in their designated location." Entries that aren't in position by 5:00 p.m. lose their spot, and the rules recommend allowing extra time for arrival because of heavy traffic.

The judging deadline is 4:30 p.m. The rules say awards go to floats that show "the best use of creativity and ability to stick to the theme of the parade," and that winners will be posted on the Chamber's website by the Monday after the parade.

Some of the other rules matter more to the people lining the curb than to the people on the floats:

  • No candy is thrown. Participants can hand candy and other items directly to people along the route if they can do it safely while keeping pace.
  • Fire trucks, ambulances and police cars are asked to go easy on horns and sirens. The Chamber's reason is that the noise "detracts from the judging of entries and the music of the Parade."
  • There is no rain date. The parade goes ahead in bad weather unless City of Somerset Police decide conditions are extreme, and the rules say it will not be postponed or rescheduled.
  • Leave the drone at home. The rules' drone section prohibits authorized drones in one line and all other drones in the next, so as written, no drones are permitted.

The no-postponement rule helps with planning. Dec. 5 at 5:00 p.m. is the only date and time, so the only things left to plan are where to stand and how long to stay.

This Year's Theme Rewards Lights

The 2026 theme is "Main Street Glow: A Festival of Lights," according to Lake Cumberland Tourism's parade listing. The parade starts at 5:00 p.m., right around early-December dusk, and a lights theme fits that timing. The best-lit entries will be on Main Street when it's dark enough to see them.

Last year's results give a sense of what the judges look for. The Commonwealth Journal reported about 110 entries in 2025, up 15 to 20 from 2024, under the theme "Santa's Workshop: The Journey to Christmas." The 2025 winners:

2025 Award Winner The Entry
First place Pulaski County Detention Center Gifts and Christmas figures behind bars
Second place Somerset High School Class of 2027 A homecoming-style entry
Third place Midland Farms Convenience Store A Christmas assembly line
Most Original Float South Kentucky RECC Glowing icicles hanging from power lines
Best Use of Lights Candido's Towing & Repair A tow truck with a glowing green underside
Best Representation of Theme Holston Gas A "Santa's Sweet Shop"

Two of those six awards already went to lighting, and one of them went to a tow truck. With a theme built around glow, more entries will likely compete for the same kind of award this year. Groups still deciding whether to enter have until Nov. 21, according to the Chamber's registration page. Entry costs $100 for Chamber members and $125 for non-members.

The Victory Lap, Street by Street

The Chamber's 2026 Parade Route Map runs about 1.4 miles:

  1. Start at Meece Middle School
  2. West on East Mt. Vernon Street
  3. North on College Street, past Somerset High School
  4. West on Oak Street
  5. South on Main Street, past Fountain Square
  6. Onto S. Central Avenue, ending in the Pulaski County Judicial Center parking lot

The route forms a loop that starts in a school lot and ends in a courthouse lot, with the Square near the end. Floats are unloaded at the Judicial Center when the parade ends. That matters because the Judicial Center plaza is also where the afternoon's other events were held last year.

Thursday Comes First

The parade isn't the first event of the week. The Community Christmas Tree Lighting is on Thursday, Dec. 3, starting at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Somerset, according to the Chamber's event page. City of Somerset Mayor Alan Keck and Pulaski County Judge-Executive Marshall Todd will host. The program includes the lighting of the community tree, a visit from Santa, Santa's reading of The Night Before Christmas and a "Santa Jam" sing-along to close the night.

If you can't make it downtown on a Thursday night, the Chamber is streaming the lighting live on its Facebook page.

Here is how the season lines up on the calendar:

Date What Where
Tue., Nov. 17 Christmas Island opens, running through Dec. 31 General Burnside Island, Burnside
Nov. 21 Parade entry deadline Chamber registration page
Thu., Dec. 3, 6:30 p.m. Community Christmas Tree Lighting Downtown Somerset
Sat., Dec. 5, 1:30 p.m. Parade lineup begins Meece Middle School
Sat., Dec. 5, 4:30 p.m. Floats judged Meece Middle School lot
Sat., Dec. 5, 5:00 p.m. Parade starts Meece to the Judicial Center
Mon., Dec. 7, 9:00 a.m. Lost-and-found pickup opens Chamber office, 236 E. Mt. Vernon St.

The last row is worth remembering if you'll be outside with kids after dark. Anything turned in to a Chamber volunteer during the parade goes to the Chamber office on East Mt. Vernon, and pickup starts that Monday morning.

The Afternoon Before the Lap

Since lineup starts at 1:30 and the parade starts at 5:00, parade day has a long afternoon. Last year that afternoon had its own events at the far end of the route. The Commonwealth Journal reported that before the 2025 parade, people could visit the Vendor Village on the Judicial Center plaza to ice skate, meet Santa, and shop crafts, goods vendors and food trucks. The Somerset Junior Woman's Club ran the village, which had about 50 vendors. One of them was Southern Grace, a booth run by Beverly Pilcher and Stella Mayfield offering "make-and-take" ornaments that people painted and put together on the spot.

The rink in 2025 was synthetic ice on the same plaza, operated by and benefiting the SKYHope Recovery Program for Women, according to the same Commonwealth Journal report. It opened the last weekend of November and stayed open through the end of December on weekends. Program director Melissa Estep told the paper that Saturday drew a much bigger crowd than the days before it.

Both are listed again for 2026. The Chamber's parade site has pages titled "SJWC Santa's Vendor Village" and "Skating on the Square." As of mid-October, neither page lists dates, hours or prices for this year. Last season's details were $5 with skates included and an opening date of Nov. 29, 2025, according to Lake Cumberland Tourism. Treat those as last year's terms until the 2026 schedule is posted.

If the 2026 setup matches last year's, the Judicial Center plaza is where you can spend the afternoon before the parade, and it's also where the floats finish.

Lights Across the Bridge

Christmas Island at General Burnside Island opens on Nov. 17 and runs through Dec. 31, according to Visit Burnside, which says event nights, Santa appearances and other activities will be announced closer to the opening. Lake Cumberland Tourism's listing describes it as a drive-through open from 6 to 9 p.m. every day with 48 displays. The island opens two weeks before the downtown events, so it's the first lights of the season in Pulaski County.

If you're entering a float this year, or you live near the route and are thinking about how parade day might affect your plans to sell or buy, The Millie Weaver Team is glad to talk it through over coffee downtown. We can also suggest a good spot to watch from on Main Street. When you're ready, schedule a consultation and we'll set a time that works around your December.
